Some couples would like to just say, I do! And be done. Some
couples want to speak loving words to each other. Some
couples would prefer not to speak at all.
Taking vows in most wedding ceremonies includes three sets
of vows. The personal vows that the Bride and Groom speak
to each other denote their devotion to one another. The
formal vows of “I do’” where the Bride and Groom state their
commitment to each other. The vows said during the ring
exchange as the Bride and Groom give each other their first
gifts as Husband and Wife.
So what makes a vow meaningful? What makes a vow
personal? How can the vows you take be expressed in a
timeless way? Vows speak to the vision of a marriage; they
reach beyond the here and now, far beyond the past and into
the hereafter. Wow, no wonder we feel a bit shaken by the
very thought of taking vows.
